What is Gum Disease?

According to the CDC, half of all American adults currently have some degree of gum disease. Gum disease has two main stages: gingivitis, the early stage characterized by mildly inflamed gums that bleed when you floss. The second stage, periodontitis, is the more severe stage that can pose a serious risk not only to your mouth but also to your entire body.

Gingivitis is completely reversible if it is caught early enough with general dentistry. Untreated, periodontitis can lead to infections, tooth loss, and an increased risk of heart attack, type 2 diabetes, or a stroke.

Keeping your gums healthy is paramount to protecting your teeth from deterioration due to bone loss and infection. We educate our patients on how to best prevent gum disease with daily home oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings in our office. For those that have already shown signs of the first stages of gum disease or gingivitis, we offer treatment to reverse this progressive oral disorder.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is caused by bacterial growth that has been allowed to progress. Bacteria are always present in the mouth, but when they are allowed to flourish, they can create a filmy substance known as plaque.

While regular brushing and flossing will remove most plaque, any that are left in hard to reach areas can harden into tartar. This can irritate the gums, causing them to become red, inflamed, and even bleed.

Left unchecked, gums will begin to recede from the teeth, creating gaps that can lead to more severe infection and even tooth loss.
